Sustainable product development
Sustainability is a big topic, and it can be challenging to get started with it. We help you define sustainability goals and measures to get there. In addition, we help identify specific areas of focus for your company and help you develop products/services that have a real impact.
What we do
Sustainability work starts with the products and the business around them.
Sustainability is a big topic, and can be challenging to get started with. We help you define sustainability goals and measures to get there. In addition, we help identify specific areas of focus for your company and help you develop products/services that have a real impact.
What we all have in common is that we have to look ahead and be prepared for future demands from markets and authorities. At the same time, we have to put our own goals and strategies for sustainability into practice.
We are concerned with the overall sustainability and that we, our customers and what we develop should be positive for people, the environment and business.
Inventas wants all products we develop to have sustainability documentation. This is an overall quality assurance that shows that we make sustainable assessments throughout the entire development process. We are determined that growth and innovation need not come at the expense of the planet or people.
That's why we consider environmental impact at every stage, from material selection to manufacturing processes and the lifespan of what we deliver. We work closely with our customers to ensure that we not only solve their most complex problems, but do so in a way that respects and sustains the world we all share.
Sustainability sprint
A sustainability sprint is an intensive sprint that can be scaled as needed. We work together in two workshops, where Inventas prepares the content and facilitates. The goal is to give you a common understanding of the situation and ambition, so that you can prioritize your sustainability work where it has the greatest impact.
We assess which requirements and regulations you must comply with, we look at future prospects and the competitive landscape. We review the product portfolio and perhaps dive deep into one key product. We then challenge you with circular and environmental considerations and see it in the context of your business model.
This is something we like to do early in a development process, i.e. in the needs phase. It can be just as relevant to do for the company independently of a development process.
The deliverable is a decision-making basis that you can use to make good choices and move forward in your sustainability work.
Product development
Sustainable product development is ultimately about making good products – something we strive for in all projects.
It's about putting sustainability at the center when making all the small and big choices in a long development process. New laws related to energy use during production, material requirements and the whole "right-to-repair" movement are drivers for change.
Our experience is that key issues in sustainable product development are:
-
Are we using the right materials, and can they be replaced with more sustainable materials in the future?
-
Have sufficient steps been taken to ensure the fewest possible variations of the same product?
-
Can the product be repaired, and can components with a short lifespan be easily replaced?
-
Can the product be easily disassembled into pure material fractions?
-
Do we have control over production? Both in terms of environmental emissions, social conditions and safety?
-
And last but not least, do we know the future requirements that will affect our products?
All of these are examples of issues we take into account when working on sustainable product development.
Sustainability strategy
Design and rollout of sustainability strategy. The rollout of the strategy can emphasize internal or external factors and we adapt the expertise accordingly. The strategy can address the entire company or be limited to a product. Inventas can manage the entire process or act as an advisor and supporter.
Regulatory analysis
Analysis of which requirements and regulations are relevant to you, your industry or product. We look at the taxonomy, relevant directives and current standards. This is useful in the needs phase and in the development process, but may also be something that becomes relevant closer to industrialization.
Mapping footprints
For the company:
Mapping the company's CO2 emissions based on the data you have available according to the GHG Protocol.
For a product:
Mapping the CO2 emissions of one or more products, in a simplified version as an LCA screening or as documentation and reporting in the form of, for example, an EPD. The former can be useful to calculate in the prototype phase to assess different scenarios and possibilities.
In order for us to achieve our 2030 and 2050 emissions targets, significant contributions from all sides are required. Our experience shows that many customers struggle to start or maintain momentum in their sustainability work. This is a long-term effort, and it is crucial that we implement effective measures now, rather than waiting. Our sustainability services are designed with this in mind. We are convinced that by taking clear action in specific areas, we not only create progress, but also synergies that promote sustainability on a broader scale, both internally in our own organization, with our customers, and also globally.
Realization: Sustainability work is going too slowly and we are not doing enough – fast enough.
